The city has budgeted a one-time $650,000 prize to someone willing to bring a grocery store to Hamilton’s downtown.
The details of the incentive have yet to be approved by council but the plan by staff is to open a request for proposals in May, asking proponents to outline their proposed location, size of the store, the breadth of product offerings, price points and any related services offered such as dry cleaning.

Ivan Mavrinac has joined a race downtown.
The owner of I.M. Leathers shifted his business from the corner of Ray and Hunter, where it was located for 35 years, to King Street East near Ferguson. His is among almost three dozen businesses that decided to call downtown home in 2011. Mavrinac, who specializes in creating customized leather suits for motorcycle racers, says he’s enjoyed his move to the core.

Crane spotting is set to overtake hand-wringing as the preoccupation in downtown Hamilton this year.
City officials say there are enough projects in the works to see up to eight construction cranes dotting the skyline in 2012, certainly a sight not seen in a very long time.

Employment surveys were conducted in 2011 to compile the number of jobs in Hamilton’s six (6) downtown areas, including Ancaster Village, Binbrook community core, Downtown Dundas, Downtown Hamilton, Downtown Stoney Creek and Downtown Waterdown.

Hamilton ranks 83rd on a list of 200 metro areas created by the Washington, D.C.-basedBrookings Institution. Its 2011 Global Metro Monitor ranks the economic performance of 200 global centres by gross domestic product (income) and employment for the years 2010 and 2011.
