Going Green

PDF Print E-mail

Below is a comprehensive list of green/energy efficient incentives and programs offered by local utility companies, government, and other delivery agencies. If you are considering a retrofit or improvements to your facility, there may be incentives available.

ecoEnergy for Renewable Heat
ecoEnergy Retrofit (Industry)
ecoEnergy Retrofit
Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP)
High Performance New Construction (HPNC)
Industrial Energy Efficiency Program (IEEP)
LEED Grant Program - City of Hamilton's LEEDing the Way CIP

ecoEnergy for Renewable Heat

The ecoENERGY for Renewable Heat program will invest $36 million over four years to: increase the use of renewable thermal energy; help develop renewable thermal energy industry capacity; and contribute to cleaner air by displacing fossil fuel-based energy use for space heating and cooling, and water heating in Canadian buildings.

Incentives will be offered to the industrial/commercial/institutional entities to support the installation of solar space and water heating. Natural Resources Canada estimates suggest the program will support installations in about 700 buildings by 2011.

ecoEnergy Retrofit (Industry)

NRCan is providing financial assistance to SMEs to help them invest in energy saving retrofits. Eligible SMEs can receive 25 percent of project costs to a maximum of $50,000 per application and $250,000 per corporate entity.

ecoEnergy Retrofit

NRCan is providing financial assistance to SMEs to help them invest in energy saving retrofits. Eligible SMEs can receive $10 per gigajoule of energy saved, up to 25 percent of eligible project costs or $50,000 per project. Almost all energy-saving measures such as efficient lighting, building envelope, motors, controls, heating, ventilating and air conditioning may be eligible.

Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program (ERIP)

The Electricity Retrofit Incentive Program is made up of two tracks:

  • Prescriptive - has predefined technologies with corresponding per unit or performance basis savings measures. These projects will tend to involve replacements and upgrades to existing systems. The incentive provided to you is based on the calculation of what you install.
  • Custom - is available for those of you who are using a more specific solution to electricity efficiency retrofitting. For these projects all technology, equipment and systems are evaluated on the basis of their power and energy performance improvement and the incentive offered based specifically on the level of improvement. All technology, equipment and systems are evaluated on the basis of their electrical demand reduction. The incentive offered of $150/kW is based specifically on the level of improvement.

High Performance New Construction (HPNC)

The Ontario Power High Performance New Construction Program (HPNC) provides design assistance and significant financial incentives for new construction or additions, and major renovation projects that exceed Code. The greater the electricity savings, the greater the incentives.

Industrial Energy Efficiency Program (IEEP)

OPA has programs to support and encourage businesses to better understand and manage their electricity use. Based on research and stakeholder sessions performed during the last year the OPA has developed and is now in the process of implementing an industrial energy efficiency program that includes electricity monitoring and targeting systems; the hiring of energy managers; specialized training and awareness programs; energy assessments and feasibility studies.

The OPA is working on implementing this program as soon as possible.

LEED Grant Program - City of Hamilton's LEEDing the Way CIP

The intent of the LEED Grant program is to provide an economic catalyst for sustainable building and sustainable land development practices located within the LEEDING the Way Community Improvement Project Area.

The purpose of the grant program is for the City to share the incremental construction cost, consultation, energy modeling and certification fees with the applicant to achieve LEED certification. Grants are calculated on the basis of the rating of official certification under the LEED rating system by the Canadian Green Building Council (CaGBC).

The program authorizes for each approved grant application a five year grant, the amount of which is subject to Council approval, in an amount not exceeding the increase in municipal realty taxes as a direct result of the development/redevelopment of land and/or building. The grant which may be approved by Council shall be an amount which does not exceed 75% of the municipal realty tax increase during the term of the grant. For purposes of determining the eligible amount of the increase in municipal realty taxes, special charges shall be excluded from the calculation. The grant would reduce the effect of an increase in municipal (City portion only) realty taxes attributable to the differential between the pre-development assessment and the post-development assessment. The approved grant is assignable. The grant program may be applied for with other incentive programs that the City of Hamilton offers except for other Tax Incremental Financing programs.
