The City of Hamilton and its citizens share a state-of-the-art healthcare system in which each hospital is a centre of excellence for a particular specialty.  We are fortunate to have a high degree of cooperation between institutions that has developed over many years. All hospitals in Hamilton are teaching hospitals. Through innovative education at McMaster University Faculty of Health Sciences and the internationally acclaimed healthcare research conducted under its auspices ensure that the very best in patient care is available to Hamilton and area.

The following are profiles of the hospital sector:

Hamilton Health Sciences

Hamilton Health Sciences includes five hospitals and a cancer centre, serving a population of 2.2 million in Hamilton as well as Central South and Central West Ontario. They offer a range of acute and specialized services.

Chedoke Hospital is home to many of Hamilton Health Sciences’ rehabilitation programs are located at Chedoke. The Hospital’s Acquired Brain Injury Program, a leading Prosthetics and Orthotics department, as well as many of the Hospital’s administrative services can also be found at Chedoke. McMaster Children’s Hospital also has a number of outpatient services at Chedoke.

Hamilton General Hospital is recognized as a regional centre of excellence in cardiovascular care, neurosciences, trauma and burn treatment.  Committed to the principles of family and patient centered care, the Hamilton General Hospital is a tertiary care centre serving people from Burlington to Brantford and Niagara Falls to Guelph.  The Hamilton General has one of the province's few Burn Units and an Integrated Stroke Unit caring for acute and rehabilitation patients.  Patients who require open-heart surgery or cardiac catheterization are also served by the General's innovative and integrated approach to care.

Henderson General Hospital provides acute inpatient and palliative care, diagnostic services and an educational environment to support the needs of cancer patients and the Juravinski Cancer Centre.  The Henderson’s highly regarded Orthopedic program combines health care and research to offer patients a range of services dedicated to helping them prepare for and recover from joint replacement surgery.

Juravinski Cancer Centre is the most comprehensive centre for cancer care and research in the Central South/Central West region. In addition to providing radiation and chemotherapy treatment for patients, the Centre provides a wide variety of services including genetic and psychosocial counseling, nutritional services and education to help patients and their families. The Centre is actively involved in laboratory research and clinical trials to discover and apply better treatment methods for cancer.

McMaster Children's Hospital is one of the largest pediatric healthcare facilities in Canada and the second busiest in Ontario. Over 40 pediatric clinics within McMaster Children's Hospital help young patients with asthma, cancer, developmental disorders and virtually any illness. McMaster Children's Hospital is also home to one of the country's newest and busiest Neonatal Intensive Care Units.

McMaster University Medical Centre has one of Canada’s most innovative Digestive Diseases programs, focused on specialized medical, surgical and research aspects of care. In conjunction with McMaster University, this program conducts more research into digestive diseases than any other program in the country. The Centre delivers a wide range of Women’s Health services, including high-risk obstetrics and gynecology, to patients from a broad region. MUMC is also home to many of the programs and services of McMaster Children’s Hospital.

St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton

St. Joseph’s Health Care is home to the world-renowned Firestone Institute for Respiratory Health, the Centre for Minimal Access Surgery, and the Father Sean O’Sullivan Research Centre with its satellite organization, the Centre for the Evaluation of Medicine. The innovative Brain Body Institute is a new addition to St. Joseph’s Hospital.

St. Peter’s Health System has five specialty programs targeted at enhancing the quality of life for older adults. It provides hospital care, long term care and research into quality care. In addition to providing complex care at St. Peter’s Hospital, St. Peter’s Health Systems manages complex care beds at Hamilton Health Sciences and St. Joseph’s Healthcare.
