Immigrant Friendly

A Diverse and Welcoming City

One in four people in Hamilton was born outside of Canada.  Between 3,000 and 4,000 immigrants land in Hamilton every year, adding to existing diversity and enriching our community. As an important centre for secondary and post-secondary education, Hamilton is also home to about 5,000 international students.

Hamilton has hundreds of places to worship for people of many different faiths.  Our local school boards offer language classes in English, French, and “heritage languages.”  We have an abundance of culinary choices, forms of cultural expression, and recreational activities.

Hamilton offers a full range of language classes and settlement programs for newcomers.

International Investment Attraction

If you are an international investor who is thinking about doing business in Canada, you should know about Hamilton.

Our business development officers will introduce you to Hamilton’s vibrant technology ecosystem, and the talent pool, research labs and government incentives that fuel innovation.

We help foreign companies make a ‘soft landing’ in Canada.  Working in partnership with McMaster Innovation Park, we can offer short-term office and meeting room space.  Our Economic Development team can help connect you to business resources, government agencies and industry associations.

Whatever your business is, we can help you make the right choice. We can help you make your site selection process easier by providing you with the latest data, information and tools provided by the City of Hamilton and the Ontario Government.

City Initiatives

The City of Hamilton welcomes new citizens and businesses to our community.

A new Global Hamilton office promotes our city abroad and through local ethnic networks to attract entrepreneurial and skilled immigrants and to retain international students. Global Hamilton is an initiative of the City’s Economic Development Division.

Hamilton’s Immigration Portal, developed by the Global Hamilton office, provides links to resources for living, working and going to school in Hamilton.  A newly designed portal launches in 2015.

The City of Hamilton offers simultaneous interpretation and translation by telephone for residents.  When you phone the city 905-546-2424, you can ask for this service.

The Hamilton Immigration Partnership Council (HIPC) brings together leaders from many sectors of the Hamilton community, including the immigrant service provider sector, businesses, community-based organizations, health, local government, media, educational institutions and youth.
